Frequently Asked Questions
-
Where is SwimWild based?
SwimWild is based in the Scottish Highlands, and all of our work is within Scotland. Our main base is Newtonmore in the Cairngorms National Park, and our local loch is Loch Insh. At the moment, all of our coaching, retreats and private guiding are within the Badenoch and Strathspey area of the Cairngorms National Park.
Where else do we go?
While our base is in the Cairngorms National Park, we venture further afield for our adventure holidays. So far, we have run adventures and expeditions in the Outer Hebrides & St Kilda, the Knoydart Peninsular, Skye and the Small Isles, and around Glenuig and Moidart. We have plans to expand our adventure holiday offering to other areas in the future.
We have previously run the Scottish Winter Swimming Championships at Loch Tay, Perthshire.
If you are looking for information about the best places to swim around the Scottish mainland or islands, including local swim groups and after-swim refreshment options – Alice’s book, Swimming Wild in Scotland – A guide to over 100 Scottish river, loch and sea swimming spots is the best place to start!
Who runs SwimWild?
SwimWild is run by Alice Goodridge. Alice has been a qualified Open Water Swimming Coach and Swim Guide since 2012 and set up SwimWild in 2018 in order to share her passion for outdoor swimming with others. For more information, see our About Alice section.
Alice is currently on maternity leave, which is why SwimWild is taking a break from running trips/retreats/events and workshops between Autumn 2023 and Spring 2024.
What is the best way to contact SwimWild?
The best way to contact SwimWild is via email. We also have an office phone number, but we are usually out and about (on the water, exploring new swim locations or working on top-secret projects), and you are unlikely to get through to us immediately if you call us. If you drop us an email, we will try to get back to you as soon as possible.

Hello, is there anybody there?! I’ve already sent an email (or left a voicemail). Why has nobody got back to me yet?

I’m looking for a swim group to join near where I live (or where I am visiting) – can you help me find people to swim with?
There is a list of UK outdoor swimming groups on the Outdoor Swimming Society’s website, which includes some of the more established Scottish groups. Please note that you have to scroll down quite a long way to find the Scottish groups!
In addition, many smaller groups have been created in the last few years all around Scotland; The Wild Swimming – Scotland Facebook page can be a good place to search for local groups.

I’m desperate to book something for this winter/next summer! Why can’t I book that particular trip/retreat/event/workshop at the moment?

SwimWild trips/retreats/events often sell out VERY quickly. How can I get advanced notice of when bookings open?
To stay up to date with all the latest news (inducing when new dates are released and open for bookings), please make sure you are signed up for our newsletter.
If everything sells out so quickly, why don’t you just add more spaces or put on more dates??
SwimWild is NOT a big company offering hundreds of trips and events each year. We are a small business, and we want to stay that way. All trips and events are organised by Alice – there is not a huge team behind the scenes. Trips and retreats are guided either by Alice herself or by her small, hand-picked team of swim guides.
We take pride in providing a small number of exceptional experiences for swimmers and love creating events that bring the wonderful swimming community together. We limit numbers on trips and events (even when demand is high) so that everyone has the best experience possible.
To make sure you don’t miss out, please make sure you are signed up for our newsletter. We will always give our subscribers advanced warning of when bookings are going to open so that you can be prepared!
I need to cancel my booking. Will I get a refund?
Please see our booking terms and conditions for more details.
I’m visiting Scotland between xxxx and xxxx dates – do you have any trips/retreats/activities I can book onto then?
If you are looking to book onto an activity over specific dates, please check out our calendar page. We will keep this up-to-date with all of our upcoming trips/events/workshops.
Please note that there are no activities open for bookings at the moment. We expect trips/retreats & workshops to start again from late summer 2024 onwards. These will not be bookable until Alice returns from maternity leave (Spring 2024). We will update the calendar as soon as dates are confirmed.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to come on a SwimWild adventure or retreat?
Retreats tend to involve a couple of dips each day, with the option of some longer swims if temperatures/conditions allow. They are suitable for both beginners and more advanced swimmers, however, as these are swimming holidays, you do need to be able to swim, float and tread water in order to participate in group swims. Acclimation to cold water is also important in order for you to get the most out of your experience. There is never any pressure to swim far or fast. You can also choose to stay in shallow water, close to one of our swim guides, if you are worried about going out of your depth. Our retreats are perfect for people who just want to give it a go, enjoy the water and soak up the scenery while having a relaxing holiday in the Cairngorms National Park.
Our week-long adventure holidays involve more swimming and are suitable for more confident and experienced swimmers, although we still prioritise swimming in beautiful places over swimming long distances. We are happy for people to only participate in the shorter swims; however, if you would like to get the most out of your time on the trip, we recommend that you can swim 1km confidently and continuously in open water (this can be front-crawl or breaststroke). Longer swims may be available for those wanting to swim longer distances (depending on sea conditions).
Please note that our adventures and expeditions that involve swimming from a boat are often the most challenging, involving mostly sea swimming, sometimes in choppy conditions and often in deep water. You will also be required to climb in and out of the boat using a steep ladder, often straight into deep water. Experience of sea swimming is necessary before booking these types of trips.
Please see the individual trip pages for more information on that particular holiday. Please do contact us if you have any questions.
I’m just a dipper, can I come too?
Yes, absolutely! Our retreats are perfect for people who just want to dip, although there is the opportunity for longer swims, too, if temperatures/conditions allow.
It is also possible to join one of our adventure holidays if you only want to dip, as long as you are aware that you will have to miss some of the longer swims. Please contact us if you have any questions.
Do I need to swim front crawl? I can only swim head-up breaststroke. Is that OK?
For our retreats, head-up breaststroke is absolutely fine – you’ll end up seeing more of the spectacular scenery, you won’t get brain freeze, and you can wear a woolly hat while swimming! What’s not to like?!
On our week-long adventure holidays, you do not need to be able to swim front crawl, although you may get more out of the longer swims if you can. Strong breaststroke swimmers are always welcome.
Please see the individual trip pages for more information on that particular holiday. Please do contact us if you have any questions.
How far do I need to be able to swim? Do I need to be able to swim a certain distance before I come?
There are no set swim distances on our retreats – we simply require that you can swim, float and tread water before you join a trip. Acclimation to cold water is also important in order for you to get the most out of your experience. We will mostly be dipping, with the option of longer swims if temperatures/conditions allow. Beginners are very welcome.
For our adventure holidays, we are happy for people to only participate in the shorter swims; however, if you would like to get the most out of your time on the trip, we recommend that you can swim 1km confidently and continuously in open water (this can be front-crawl or breaststroke). Longer swims may be available for those wanting to swim longer distances (depending on sea conditions).
Please see the individual trip pages for more information on that particular holiday. Please do contact us if you have any questions.
I’m worried that I will be at the back. What if I’m too slow?
Speed doesn’t matter; it’s definitely not a race!
We usually have at least two qualified swim guides on our adventure holidays and swim retreats. One of the guides normally stays at the back of the group, so you will never get left behind.
On boat-based adventure trips, we usually stagger swim starts – either setting off slower swimmers first or dropping them off a little bit later in the swim (so they don’t need to swim quite so far) – that way everyone can enjoy the swim at their own pace and still finish at roughly the same time.
Do I have to take part in all the swims?
No, not at all! Remember, this is your holiday – you can participate as much or as little as you want.
Can my non-swimming partner or friend come with me on the trip/retreat?
Yes, of course. All of our trips and retreats take place in spectacular parts of Scotland, and there’s always plenty to do, even if you don’t fancy getting into the water. You never know, though. We might even tempt them in for a dip!
Can I book a ‘private’ trip for just me and my friends?
While our fixed-date group swimming holidays and retreats are our main adventures, we can also occasionally set up private retreats or adventure holidays for self-contained groups on dates that suit you. Minimum numbers apply, and as a general rule, private group bookings require at least 6-12 months advanced notice.
Please contact us if you would like to book one of our trips as a private group.
Who comes on SwimWild trips and retreats?
We get a real mixture of people on SwimWild trips and retreats.
Each trip is typically made up of a mix of solo travellers, who have booked on their own, and pairs/groups of friends travelling together. Ages range from 18-80 but with the majority of people in the 35-65 age category.
We do tend to get a higher percentage of women on our holidays; however, none of the trips are exclusively for ‘women only’ – men are very welcome too!
-
Do you offer half or full-day private guided swim adventures?
We are sometimes able to offer half or full-day private guided swim adventures in the Cairngorms National Park, but please note that these are no longer a main part of what we do.
All private guiding is subject to Alice’s availability. Alice is currently on maternity leave until Spring 2024.
Can you organise bespoke trips/retreats for my group?
While our fixed-date group swimming holidays and retreats are our main adventures, we can also occasionally set up private retreats or adventure holidays for self-contained groups on dates that suit you. Minimum numbers apply, and as a general rule, private group bookings require at least 6-12 months advanced notice.
Please contact us if you would like to book one of our trips as a private group.
-
What kit & equipment will I need for my booking?
Although the basics are normally the same, the kit required for each SwimWild activity will be slightly different. An up-to-date kit list will be emailed to you with the final information for your booking. In the meantime, here are some useful PDFs to give you an idea of what to bring.
Kit Lists –
Introduction to Open Water Swimming Course **
Front Crawl Technique WorkshopFull or Half-day Guided Swim Adventure – Cairngorms
Swimming & Yoga Retreat
Cairngorms Winter RetreatKnoydart & the Isles Adventure
West Coast WeekendIf you have forgotten anything, don’t panic! We usually have a supply of caps, goggles, tow floats and neoprene bits and bobs in our ‘spare kit’ bag!
** Please note that for our introduction sessions, you do not need to buy any special equipment before the course. As long as you have a swimming costume/trunks, a towel and some warm clothes for afterwards, you can borrow other items. Please let us know what you will need to borrow so we can ensure we bring what you need on the day.
We have a small selection of wetsuits that can be hired for any activity, ranging from size 8 to size 20+. Please let us know at the time of booking if you would like to hire a wetsuit so that we can ensure we have the correct sizes when we see you.
We also sell a selection of useful bits and bobs in the SwimWild shop. Items of kit can be pre-ordered (subject to availability) and brought along to your activity – please select ‘local pickup’ to avoid paying for postage.
Do I need to wear a wetsuit to get started?
No. You do not need to wear a wetsuit to get started; however, we recommend them for our Introduction to Open Water Swimming Courses, as having a bit of neoprene protection is a gentler way to start your cold water swimming journey!
Even though the SwimWild team are mostly ‘skins’* swimmers, we actually do think wetsuits are wonderful! They keep you warm, help you stay in the water for longer, and their added buoyancy helps you to float, which means you will have to put less effort in to keep your head above water if you get tired. They can also make you a bit faster too.
If you already have a general watersports and shortie wetsuit, they are absolutely fine for getting started. They are not as flexible as swim-specific wetsuits but tend to be available in a larger range of sizes and are pretty affordable. Swim-specific wetsuits are a bigger investment, and it is best to see whether you want to carry on swimming outdoors before buying one. We can also advise you on what sort of wetsuit might suit you best.
We have a small selection of wetsuits that can be hired for any activity, ranging from size 8 to size 20+. Please let us know at the time of booking if you would like to hire a wetsuit so that we can ensure we have the correct sizes when we see you.
If you would like to try without a wetsuit, that is fine too. Please be aware that, on our Introduction to Open Water Swimming courses, we may ask you to exit the water a little earlier than the rest of the group if there is a chance you may get cold.
*Skins – In open water terms, swimming ‘skins’ means swimming in just a swimsuit/trunks rather than with a wetsuit. This term is not to be confused with ‘skinny dipping’, which is something else entirely!
Do people usually wear wetsuits on SwimWild trips/adventures/retreats?
We always tend to have a mixture of wetsuit and non-wetsuit swimmers on our trips/adventures and retreats.
For our adventures and expeditions, swims tend to be a bit longer, and a higher percentage of swimmers choose to wear wetsuits. For our winter retreats, our dips tend to be very short, so most people dip without wetsuits. You are, however, very welcome to wear a wetsuit if you would like to!
Each swimmer is an individual, and it is important to do what works best for you. We all swim for different reasons, so we have different needs around kit. If it helps you get into and enjoy the water, then it is the right option for you.
If you usually swim without a wetsuit, you won’t be required to wear one; however, we always ask about your swimming ability, experience and cold acclimatisation at the time of booking.
Do I need goggles?
It’s always a good idea to bring goggles so you can see what is under the water. Even if you don’t fancy putting your face in the water, you may surprise yourself on the day!
If you wear contact lenses or glasses, prescription goggles are an option. You should check with your optician regarding swimming and what options are available.
Where can I buy kit?
You can buy various items of kit from the SwimWild shop. We only sell swimming kit and equipment that we use ourselves, including swimming hats, goggles, tow floats, neoprene gloves and socks. We also sell useful re-warming items, including our SwimWild Robes and mini hot water bottles!
-
Do we offer swimming lessons for children?
No, we do not offer any swimming lessons for under 18’s.

We usually offer small group Front Crawl Technique Workshops (pool) and Introduction to Open Water Swimming Courses. We expect these to resume from Spring/Summer 2024 onwards.
Do we offer one-to-one swimming lessons (pool or open water)?
Although this is something Alice has offered in the past, she cannot offer one-to-one swimming lessons at the moment.

I’m interested in swimming an ice mile, can you help me?
While Alice and Becca have both competed official IISA ice miles, SwimWild cannot offer ice mile support to other swimmers. Ice miles are incredibly challenging to organise and require on-site medics, boat support, qualified and experienced safety crew and post-swim recovery crew. We do not have a big enough team to facilitate this.
While the Cairngorms National Park may seem like a perfect place to complete an ice mile, the water is only at optimum ice swimming temperature (3-5 degrees C) for a very short time. Most of the winter, our lochs are below 2 degrees C and/or frozen.
We recommend contacting swimyourswim for more information about ice mile support.
Where can I watch The Ice Mile film?
Here is a link to where you can see the inspirations Ice Mile film, starring Becca Harvey.
What is happening about the Scottish Winter Swimming Championships?
Please see the separate section on the Scottish Winter Swimming Championships below.
I want to do a long swim (e.g. length of a loch). Can you offer boat support?
While Alice has swum the length of two of Scotland’s longest lochs, SwimWild is not in a position to offer boat support to other swimmers.
Loch Swim Alba supported Alice’s swims and we would recommend them to anyone looking for long-swim boat support in Scotland.
-
Is there any news on the Scottish Winter Swimming Championships?
We are sad to announce that there will be no Scottish Winter Swimming Championships event in 2024.
The Scottish Winter Swimming Championships is organised by Alice and her tiny team of helpers (along with a much bigger team of amazing volunteers over the event weekend) for the benefit of the wonderful winter swimming community.
A huge amount of work goes on behind the scenes to create and deliver an event like this. As well as finding a suitable new venue for future competitions, we are also tasked with establishing new partnerships and funding in order to secure the future of the event. This, along with Alice being on maternity leave over the winter, means that we are not in a position to run the Scottish Winter Swimming Championships this winter season.
Although the event’s future is still uncertain, we hope that the event will be back again in 2025!
What happened at the 2023 event?
After a very successful start to the 2023 Scottish Winter Swimming Championships, we sadly had to cancel the event halfway through due to a discharge of sewage into the marina that we use for the competition. This happened at a lunch break when no swimmers were in the water. We are devastated that this happened and very sorry to all those who did not get a chance to swim over the weekend.
Taymouth Marina admitted the incident was due to a mechanical failure with their sewage treatment tank, which we had been repeatably told was a ‘closed system’, completely unconnected to the loch. We spent many months pursuing a legal claim against Taymouth Marina in order to try and obtain compensation/payout to cover competitor refunds from the venue’s insurance. We were very disappointed with Taymouth Marina’s response to our case and their attitude to the environmental pollution that resulted from the incident. As such, we will not be returning to the venue in the future.
For more information, please see our cancellation update, refund update and event terms & conditions below.

I had a fantastic time on one of your trips/retreats/events/workshops. Where can I leave a review?
Fantastic! We are so glad you had a wonderful time. If wouldn’t mind leaving an ‘official’ review, that would be much appreciated! Having more reviews really makes a difference to a small business like SwimWild.
or
**You don’t need a Gmail/Google account to leave a review. When it asks you to create an account, say yes, click ‘for myself’ and then choose “use my current email address” instead. It can be any email address (not just Gmail). You don’t actually end up creating a Google account, but you will be sent a verification code to confirm your contact details.
THANK YOU!!
I have a copy of Alice’s guidebook, and I think it’s great! Where is the best place to leave a review?
Fabulous! We’re so glad that you love Alice’s guidebook. It would be amazing if you could leave a quick review. A single word, sentence, full review, or even just a five-star rating would be GREAT!
Having more ratings and reviews will really help to promote the book going forwards.
Amazon.co.uk is the best place to leave a review (even if you bought the book directly from SwimWild, at a book shop or from the publishers).
THANK YOU!!

Please bear in mind that Alice is on maternity leave until Spring 2024. She will be passed on some messages and may be able to conduct a limited number of phone interviews, but we cannot guarantee that she will get back to you during this time.
I represent a brand that would like to collaborate with SwimWild. Is this something you are interested in?
SwimWild does not promote other people’s products or activities unless we already have an established relationship with that brand. We are not interested in becoming ‘brand ambassadors’ for swim-related products.
We are, however, happy to consider long-term collaborations with brands that align with our values (sustainability, excellent quality, community) and benefit both parties over an extended period.
Future event sponsorship opportunities are an area we are particularly keen to explore. If you represent a brand that would be interested in sponsoring a future event (e.g. Scottish Winter Swimming Championships), please do get in touch.
Contact Us
If you would like to get in touch with SwimWild please fill in our contact form. Alternatively, you can call us or email us directly.
IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU GET IN TOUCH – Between now and Spring 2024 the SwimWild office will mostly be closed, and we will only be operating occasional and very limited office/admin hours. This is due to Alice being on maternity leave.
