Join SwimWild for a restorative few days of spring swims and invigorating dips in the Cairngorms National Park. We’ll spend our days exploring beautiful local lochs, rivers and forests, before returning to our base at Inshriach House for gentle yoga, relaxing sauna experiences and wonderful home-cooked food.
There is no pressure to take part in every activity, but there will be plenty of opportunities to swim or dip in spectacular locations, enjoy time outdoors and unwind in Inshriach’s magical woodland surroundings. Expect breathtaking scenery, incredible food and the warm, relaxed atmosphere that SwimWild retreats are known for.
Is this retreat for me?
This retreat is for anyone looking for a balance of gentle adventure, lovely company and genuine time to unwind. With a maximum of just ten guests, you’ll be properly looked after throughout, and there is no pressure to take part in every activity. You are always welcome to choose a gentle dip, adapt a walk, miss a yoga session or simply enjoy some quiet time at the house.
Swimming
This retreat is suitable for both beginners and more experienced outdoor swimmers, although ideally you should have some experience of cold water before joining us.
The water will still be chilly in April, so there will be a mixture of short dips and opportunities to swim for a little longer if the temperature, conditions and individual swimmers allow. If you would prefer simply to dip, that is absolutely fine. Wetsuits and other neoprene are very welcome.
All swimming activities will be supported by experienced, qualified open-water swim guides. We will help everyone participate at a level that feels enjoyable and appropriate for them.
If you are unsure whether the retreat is suitable for you, please get in touch and we can talk through the options.
Walking
Our swims will include a mixture of easily accessible locations and places reached on foot through the beautiful Cairngorms landscape.
Most walks will be on relatively good paths and tracks, but some may last for up to 45 minutes each way and include narrow, uneven or steeper sections. You will need sturdy walking boots, suitable outdoor clothing and a reasonable level of general mobility.
The precise locations and distances will always be adapted to the group, weather and ground conditions.
Yoga
The yoga sessions will be suitable for both complete beginners and those with more experience.
Across the retreat, we’ll enjoy a mixture of gentle flowing movement, restorative stretching, breathwork and relaxation. Each session will complement the rhythm of the retreat: helping us settle in after travelling, ease our bodies after walking and swimming, and leave feeling restored.
The yoga teacher will offer different options throughout, allowing you to remain in control of the intensity and adapt the practice to suit your own body. As with every part of the retreat, taking part is always optional.
Come with a sense of fun and adventure, plenty of warm kit and a big appetite!
About Inshriach House
Our base is the beautiful Inshriach House, originally built as an Edwardian shooting lodge and now a wonderfully characterful Highland retreat, with cosy drawing rooms, a magnificent dining hall and even its own gin distillery in the grounds.
Nestled four miles south of Aviemore within 200 acres of private woodland and pasture, the estate includes three miles of riverbank along the River Spey. It has its own secret swim spot, complete with a hot tub and sauna, making it the perfect base for a restorative spring swimming adventure.
The house has five double bedrooms, two twin rooms and three single rooms. None of the bedrooms is ensuite, but there are three shared upstairs bathrooms and a modern shower room downstairs. Seven of the bedrooms also have their own hand basins.
Despite feeling a world away from everyday life, Inshriach is easy to reach. Aviemore Railway Station is approximately four miles away, with direct daytime and overnight train services from London and connections from across Scotland. Please see the travel information below for further details.
Itinerary
Thursday – Welcome to the Cairngorms
Arriving at Inshriach House in time for lunch, we’ll be ready to discover beautiful swim locations and share the experience with a lovely group of like-minded swimmers. We’ll chat about the days ahead before setting off for our first spring swim at breathtaking Loch Morlich—home to the highest freshwater beach in the UK—with spectacular views towards the Cairngorm Mountains.
Afterwards, we’ll return to Inshriach for a gentle yoga session, time to relax and a delicious meal together in the dining room—the perfect introduction to our Spring Reset Retreat!
Friday – Fairy Loch and Spring Swims
Today we’ll walk through ancient Caledonian pine forest to An Lochan Uaine. Also known as the Fairy Loch, local legend says it gets its remarkable green colour because the fairy folk wash their clothes in its waters!
After time to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and some lunch, we’ll head on to another local loch for a second swim or dip. Later in the afternoon, we’ll return to Inshriach for restorative yoga and time to unwind before another fabulous dinner together.
Saturday – Lochs, Rivers and Hidden Sauna
Today we’ll head out for another spring swim adventure, perhaps combining a scenic loch swim with a dip in one of the Cairngorms’ beautiful rivers. With longer spring days, we can take our time and enjoy more of the changing landscape.
After returning to Inshriach, we’ll enjoy another gentle yoga session before wandering down to the banks of the River Spey for a dip and sauna. If the weather is kind, we hope to finish our final full day with a relaxed barbecue beside the river.
Sunday – Yoga, Final Swim and Farewell Lunch
Our final morning together, but we’ll still have time for yoga and one last swim! After a light breakfast and gentle yoga session, we’ll head out for a final dip at one of our beautiful local swim spots.
We’ll return to Inshriach to warm up, pack and enjoy a wonderful farewell lunch together. You’ll depart feeling restored, invigorated and reconnected, carrying memories of the time you spent exploring the waters and landscapes of the Cairngorms in spring.
Fabulous Food
Food is a huge part of every SwimWild retreat, and you certainly won’t go hungry.
Our wonderful retreat cook, Pauline, creates generous, imaginative meals that bring everyone together around the table. For the Spring Reset, expect fresh, colourful food inspired by the season: vibrant sharing feasts, nourishing post-swim meals, homemade cakes, fabulous flavours and a celebratory farewell lunch.
Pauline’s food is consistently one of the highlights of our retreats. Guests regularly tell us that they would quite like to take her home with them afterwards!
We can cater for most dietary requirements with advance notice. Please provide full details when completing your booking information.
